Demo Videos

by J Scott on June 18, 2014

The first day of demo was a success. The demo company got the house down in about 2 hours and then spent most of the rest of the day putting debris in dumpsters. By the end of the day, they were tearing up the basement foundation walls and the concrete slab, though there’s still a ways to go in getting it all out of the hole and into dumpsters.

Here are a couple time-lapse videos from today’s demo:

From the Dropcam camera in the front of the house (just the main house demo):

From the GoPro camera in the back of the house (full day of demo):

Awesome! The addition of the 2nd camera really makes big difference. Thanks so much for doing this. Itโ€™s like a college education on home construction. I love it!

Hey George – What’s not accurate???

that it’s like “college education”. this will be like watching a TV show. you see things, but you dont know how it will be done. you dont know where the foundation piers go and how they are tied. you dont know if you will butt the headers or if you will use foam gasket between the concrete and the plates. this will be a copy of the DYI show with Brian Baeumler, he built his own house and documented the project. it was great and he was actually working on it.

That sounds like a lot of detail that might put me to sleep. Much like college, so I guess you’re right. I am more interested in the contractor bids, the permits, and the timeline. I don’t see this as a copy of anything I have seen before.

I love seeing the footage from the back camera! I can’t stop laughing, though, while watching this because it’s like this time=elapse is on steroids or something – blink and it’s done! It was awesome to see it this morning and my girls loved it (and Lish, who is extremely well behaved on a construction site!). Thanks for letting us be there!

Absolutely brilliant. Living vicariously thru you at this point as I’ve been living overseas for the past 5 years and can’t play with my houses day to day.

Did you get access to the neighbor’s broadband connection or how did you sort out connectivity for the Dropcam?

Mike

Thanks Michael! The Dropcam is actually physically located in the upstairs bedroom window of our neighbor/friend across the street (we then use the digital zoom on the Dropcam to get a closer-up view). So, it has access to power and wifi through my friend’s house…

Great footage J! I’m loving the multiple angles and the time-lapse video. Did they let you take a swing with that bulldozer? Did you guys keep anything at all from the demolished house?

Hey Michael,

We had a big turnout at the demo yesterday — a lot of people brought their kids. During a break, the machine operator spent about 30 minutes letting each of the kids sit on his lap and move some debris using the arm and scoop. Kids loved it, but by the time they were done, he was ready to get back to work, so I didn’t get my own chance. A little bummed about that, but I probably would have done something stupid, anyway… ๐Ÿ™‚

We actually lived in the house for several months before we tore it down, so we have some mementos. From the demo, I took a single brick, and I’ll figure out a place to incorporate it into the new build. Just a little piece of history to carry forward…

George – Agreed about the back view…that camera is closer and better quality for this kind of stuff…

Great stuff J! As always thanks for sharing an inside view as a successful investor. Your contributions are outstanding and thescottpad.com is another great example.
I look forward to connecting with you next month at our NYC meetup.
